CEMSS STUDENTS GAIN SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE FROM VISIT TO AGRICULTURE DEPT

Agricultural Science enrolled students at the Charles E Mills Secondary School paid a visit to the Plant Propagation Unit at the Department of Agriculture, St. Kitts on Thursday, 11th May 2023.

The purpose of the visit was to provide a practical experience that would help to develop the knowledge and skills of the students who are pursuing secondary level science and technology, principles and practices of agriculture studies.


During the visit, Agronomist at the Department of Agriculture, Bronte Tucker facilitated the hands on learning session where the students were introduced to the different methods of plant propagation, taught the importance of plant propagation in Agri-Business and were given the opportunity to explore the various propagation techniques through on-site demonstrations.


Propagation Technician, Keifer Kelly assisted by showing the students the step-by-step methods of grafting, air layering, root cuttings, budding and seed scarification.


The Plant Propagation lesson wrapped up with a comprehensive demonstration of how to use propagation tools like budding tape and knife, pruners, grafting clips, aluminum foil and plastic wraps to successfully perform the scientific procedures.
