Department of Environment observes June as Environment Month

BASSETERRE, St Kitts, June 9, 2023 – The Ministry of Environment rolled out an extensive month of activities to celebrate Environment Month in June 2023.

The month began with the observance of World Environment Day on Monday, 5th June, 2023, under the theme, “Solutions to Plastic Pollution”.

It also included an Environment Commitment Cocktail where partners were invited to make financial pledges towards the Department’s environmental projects. Several media appearances on local television, radio and social media featured officers within the Department.

Later in the month, the Department will partner with the St. Kitts Music Festival to promote public education on plastics. For this, vendors have agreed to use biodegradable cups, containers and cutlery. Additionally, messages and advertisements will be broadcast during the event, to sensitize the public about the upcoming ban on single-use plastics.

Minister of Environment and Climate Action et al, Hon. Dr. Joyelle Clarke said the Government of St Kitts and Nevis fully backs the Department’s next steps towards banning the use of single-use plastics and is now mapping the approach of how the Federation will ban them. This is viewed as a multi-stakeholder approach that involves government and community engagement on the most suitable roadmap and timeframe.

The Ministry of Environment and The Ministry of Climate Action are tasked with collectively working towards sustainability, climate resilience and environmental stewardship.
