LET’S MOVE,” SAYS MINISTER DUGGINS AS ST. KITTS AND NEVIS OBSERVES INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC DAY

Basseterre, St. Kitts, June 23, 2023 (SKNIS): The importance of physical activity to a person’s overall well-being was highlighted by Minister of Sports, the Honourable Samal Duggins on Friday (June 23, 2023) as St. Kitts and Nevis joins the global community in celebrating today as International Olympic Day.

In a nationally televised address, Minister Duggins noted that the theme for the annual observance “Let’s Move” is quite fitting as it encourages active movement.

“During the course of each day, I encourage you to do some type of physical activity, be it a brisk walk, a run, or playing sports,” he stated. “Our nation must be physically active as this will assist with ensuring a healthy population.”

The Minister of Sports added that the Olympic Games is a unique global event that commands the attention of the world every four years. In addition to the celebration of sports, it stands as a platform for the promotion of important values such as excellence, respect, and friendship. These were described as essential building blocks to a peaceful and better world.

“The Olympics have also been instrumental in promoting gender equality and breaking down racial barriers,” said Minister Duggins. “It has provided opportunities for women to participate in sports and compete at the highest level. The games have also served as a platform for athletes to take a stand against discrimination and promote social justice.”

Honourable Duggins also encouraged the public to join him in pledging full support to local athletes while encouraging the nation’s youth to “take up sports and lead a healthy and active lifestyle.”
