The Association of Caribbean Media Workers mourns the death of colleague, journalist, communicator and activist Nylah Ali whose sudden passing has shocked her media colleagues in and around the Caribbean.
Nylah would be remembered for her fearlessness, activism, commitment to journalism and most of all her guidance and advice to the ACM over the years. Her vision for a media association to protect the interest of media workers in Trinidad and Tobago had its genesis in the organisation of can be considered the “Express Chapter” of the Media Association of Trinidad and Tobago( MATT). This chapter would later become what we know as MATT between 1986/87. She was also present for the development of the ACM in 2000 as part of a number of collaborative activities aimed at birthing a regional media body. Nylah was also responsible for the development of ACM’s logo. For many years she offered her support to ACM in the form of guidance as well as to assist with planning and logistics for many of ACM activities.
The ACM remembers Nylah as a relentless activist in the promotion of press freedom.
Even though Nylah left mainstream media, she followed with keen interest many issues that affect journalists and journalism throughout the region and remained in touch providing support to her colleagues in many ways.
The ACM offers its condolences to Nylah’s family and friends at this time.
