GOVERNMENT OF ST. KITTS AND NEVIS ANNOUNCES EARLY CLOSURE OF OPERATIONS AHEAD OF TROPICAL STORM TAMMY

Basseterre, St. Kitts, October 19, 2023 (SKNIS):Owing to the impending threat of Tropical Storm Tammy, the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis has announced the early closure of all schools and government offices from midday on Friday, October 20, 2023. This decision comes after detailed weather advisories from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

Private Sector organizations are kindly asked to adjust their operations for safety.

Tropical Storm Tammy is forecast to significantly impact the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis from late Friday through to Saturday. Citizens are advised to monitor local news channels and official government updates for the latest information on the storm’s trajectory and intensity.

Prime Minister, the Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew, urged all to take this warning seriously.

“I strongly encourage every citizen and resident to ensure the safety of their homes and properties,” said Dr. Drew. “More importantly, safeguard your families. Prepare emergency kits, secure loose outdoor objects, and avoid unnecessary travel during this time.”

Citizens and residents are also reminded to stay away from low-lying and flood-prone areas, check on neighbours, especially the elderly and disabled, and strictly adhere to all advisories issued by NEMA and other relevant authorities.

The Federation’s top priority remains the safety and well-being of all its residents. Updates on the reopening of schools and business operations will be communicated as the situation unfolds.
