ST. KITTS AND NEVIS AWARDED TOP POSITIONS AT USVI OFF ISLAND EXHIBITION ANNUAL AGRICULTURE AND FOOD FAIR

Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 22, 2024 (SKNIS): In a proud moment for the Federation, the Nevis Farmers’ Cooperative Society and the St. Kitts Farmers’ Cooperative Society were awarded first and second places, respectively, at the prestigious 52nd Annual Agriculture and Food Fair held from February 17 to 19, 2024, at the Rudolph Shulterbrandt Agricultural Complex, in St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands.

This remarkable achievement underlines the high quality and dedication behind the agricultural efforts of both islands.

Second place was awarded to the St. Kitts Farmers’ Cooperative Society

Led by the Honourable Samal Duggins, St. Kitts and Nevis’ Minister of Agriculture, the delegation showcased the best of what the Federation has to offer in terms of agricultural products and produce. This year’s fair, themed “Agriculture: Our Future and So Much More” aimed to highlight the critical role of agriculture in ensuring food security and celebrated the significant successes of local agricultural initiatives.

The participation of St. Kitts and Nevis was not only a platform to exhibit the fruits of their agricultural labour but also an opportunity to forge important trade links. The delegation’s efforts bore fruit as successful negotiations were held with supermarkets in the United States Virgin Islands to import locally-grown products from St. Kitts and Nevis.

Minister Duggins expressed his enthusiasm for the achievements.

“These accomplishments reflect the dedication and hard work of the Nevis and St Kitts Cooperatives, backed by the government’s initiatives,” said Minister Duggins, while further highlighting the broader implications of these successes.  “This milestone marks a significant step forward in ensuring food security and promoting economic growth, not only for St. Kitts and Nevis but also across the Caribbean region.”

The minister lauded the success of the agricultural community at the fair as a testament to the government’s commitment to championing food security and supporting local farmers.

Minister Duggins extended heartfelt gratitude to all participants, cooperatives, supporters, and partners who contributed to the success of this venture. This achievement, he said, is a stepping stone towards a more secure and prosperous future for agriculture in St. Kitts and Nevis and the wider Caribbean.
