The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Marine Resources is seeking a dynamic and knowledgeable individual to join our team as a Livestock Extension Officer, specializing in Small Ruminants. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development and improvement of small ruminant farming practices in our nation.
Position Title: Livestock Extension Officer (Small Ruminants)
Location: Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Marine Resources, Department of Agriculture, La Guerite Basseterre.
Job Type: Full-time
Responsibilities:
- Provide extension services and technical support to small ruminant farmers, including goat and sheep producers, to enhance productivity and profitability. Conduct training workshops, demonstrations, and field days to educate farmers on best management practices for small ruminant production, health, and nutrition. Collaborate with other extension officers and agricultural experts to develop and implement extension programs and initiatives.
- Conduct farm visits and consultations to assess the needs of small ruminant farmers and provide personalized advice and recommendations.
- Assist in the collection and analysis of data related to small ruminant production, market trends, and industry developments.
- Prepare educational materials, fact sheets, and extension publications on small ruminant farming topics for distribution to farmers and stakeholders.
- Liaise with government agencies, research institutions, and industry organizations to stay updated on relevant research findings, policies, and regulations.
- Participate in outreach activities and community events to promote small ruminant farming and agricultural sustainability.
Requirements:
- Associates degree, in agriculture or related field. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of two years of experience working as an extension officer or in a related agricultural role, with a focus on livestock management and small ruminant production.
- Knowledge and expertise in small ruminant husbandry, nutrition, breeding, and health management.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with farmers, stakeholders, and colleagues.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and a proactive approach to addressing challenges in small ruminant farming.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a commitment to supporting the agricultural community and promoting sustainable farming practices.
