GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS CONDUCT VISIT OF CAYON HIGH SCHOOL’S ON-GOING RENOVATION
Basseterre: St. Kitts, Thursday March 14, 2024: Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Hon. Dr. Geoffrey Hanley conducted a follow-up visit to the Cayon High School on Thursday 14 March 2024. The officials’ visit entailed a tour of the facility, and discussions with the principal and deputy principal as students had been moved to remote learning for the rest of the week to facilitate the current phase of repairs.
During the Government officials’ visit, including Permanent Secretary Mrs. Lisa-Romayne Pistana, Chief Education Officer Mr. Francil Morris, Deputy Chief Mr. Roger Woodley accompanied by a team from the MOE Building and Maintenance Unit, plumbing work on the students’ bathroom had commenced.
Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew conveyed his government’s commitment to the safety of staff and students and the upkeep of school structures. Furthermore, he expressed his pleasure with what had been accomplished since his initial visit in October of 2023. The Prime Minister said given the magnitude of needed repairs, he supported the MOE’s comprehensive work plan to upgrade school facilities. He added that this has become his most frequently visited school.
Deputy Prime Minister, Hon Dr Geoffrey Hanley expressed his Ministry’s continued commitment to school safety by outlining a few of the areas that will be covered in their comprehensive work plan for the Cayon High School, including conducting air quality tests,
upgrading classroom blocks, demolition of the wooden structures, the sealing and repainting of
walls. Also, he reiterated his Ministry’s commitment to ensuring that schools are safe and
conducive for teaching and learning. The Ministry’s commitment to improving the teaching and
learning spaces in schools is evident as on Wednesday 13 March 2024 all high schools including
Cayon High School were supplied with student desks and chairs.
Newly appointed principal Mrs. Kyla Morris said she was eager to have the students and teachers
return to school and was confident that it would happen shortly given the hard work of the team
from the Public Works Department and the Ministry of Education’s Project and Building
Maintenance Unit.
Permanent Secretary Mrs. Lisa-Romayne Pistana shared the teams’ commitment to ensuring that
all spaces are conducive for teaching and learning. Also, she confirmed that students are
expected to be at school in the coming week all being well. She advised parents to stay abreast of
releases from the Ministry of Education.
