THE DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE (PLANT QUARANTINE)ADVISES OF THE PHYTOSANITARY MEASURES IN PLACE FOR IMPORTING PLANTS AND PLANT PRODUCTS AHEAD MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATIONS.

Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 9th, 2024):

The National Plant Protection Organization (NPPO) of St. Kitts and Nevis would like to remind importers and the public about the phytosanitary measures in place for importing plants and plant products into our island nation, especially as Mother’s Day approaches and the demand for floral arrangements increases.

To prevent the introduction and spread of regulated pests, the following phytosanitary measures must be adhered to when importing plants or plant products:

All consignments of plants and plant products must be accompanied by a valid Phytosanitary Certificate issued by the NPPO of the exporting country, certifying that the shipment meets our import requirements. Imported plants and plant products may be subject to inspection by our quarantine officers upon arrival, and any infested or non-compliant shipments will be refused entry or confiscated upon arrival.

Importers must obtain an import permit from the Plant Quarantine Unit at the Department of Agriculture for certain regulated plant species or commodities before shipment. We urge all importers, florists, and the public to strictly follow these phytosanitary measures to protect St. Kitts and Nevis’ agricultural and natural resources from invasive pests.

The Plant Quarantine Unit would also like to take this opportunity to wish all the amazing mothers in St. Kitts and Nevis a very happy and blessed Mother’s Day! Mothers are the bedrock of our families and communities, and we celebrate their love, strength, and nurturing spirit on this special day.
