PUBLIC ADVISORY re: E-COMMERCE SCAMS

The White Collar Crime Unit (WCCU) of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force
(RSCNPF) in collaboration with the St. Kitts and Nevis Financial Intelligence Unit
(SKNFIU) is issuing this advisory to the general public to assist with the identification
and prevention of E-Commerce Scams.

Intelligence suggests that there are illicit actors (scammers) who are utilizing social
media and purporting to be legitimate sellers of goods. The general public is hereby
advised to exercise caution when utilising social media as a channel for the selling and
the procuring of goods and the use of online platforms for payments.

RECOMMENDATIONS

 Exercise caution when transacting business in social media.

 If the seller is unknown or cannot be verified, refrain from conducting the
transaction.

 Confirm via telephone contact whether the seller possesses the goods and
the selling price.

 Verify that payment is received through telephone contact with the seller.

 Be wary of purchasing goods from unknown people; goods might be stolen
items.

The RSCNPF and SKNFIU continue to effect their national mandates through this
dissemination in the fight against money laundering and other related activities.
