PRIME MINISTER DR. DREW CONVENES URGENT MEETING WITH SENIOR GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS ON IMMINENT TROPICAL SYSTEM THREAT

Basseterre, St. Kitts, August 11, 2024 (SKNIS): As a tropical system continues to develop in the Atlantic, posing a potential threat to the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, Prime Minister, the Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew, convened an urgent ZOOM meeting with senior government officials to assess the situation and ensure comprehensive preparedness measures are in place.

The meeting took place earlier today, Sunday, August 11, and was led by National Disaster Coordinator Abdias Samuel, who provided Prime Minister Dr. Drew with an in-depth update on the current status of the weather system. Mr. Samuel outlined the potential impact on the Federation and detailed the preparedness actions being implemented under the National Disaster Management Framework. These actions are designed to safeguard the population and minimize any disruptions that may arise from the system’s development.

In his remarks, Prime Minister Drew expressed his sincere gratitude to all attendees for their prompt response and dedication to prioritising the preparedness and response activities for the impending weather threat. He emphasised the importance of proactive measures and coordination among all relevant agencies to ensure the safety and well-being of the citizens and residents of St. Kitts and Nevis.

Also present at the meeting were Acting Prime Minister, the Honourable Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, Permanent Secretary of National Security Glenroy Blanchette, and Chair of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Board, Mrs. Claricia Langley-Stevens. Each of these officials reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the ongoing efforts to ensure the Federation’s readiness in the face of this potential threat.
