AGRI CHRISTMAS NIGHT MARKET TO FEATURE PREMIUM LOCAL PORK AS GOVERNMENT CREATES MARKET OPPORTUNITIES TO SUPPORT LIVESTOCK FARMERS

(MOA Basseterre, St. Kitts, 17 December 2024):

The government of St. Kitts and Nevis, through the Ministry of Agriculture, is strengthening and developing new market opportunities for livestock farmers in St. Kitts and Nevis through initiatives like the upcoming Agri Christmas Night Market, scheduled for Wednesday, December 18th, 2024, at the Basseterre Public Market. This event will establish a vital platform for meat producers, specifically pig farmers, to exhibit and sell fresh, premium pork directly to consumers, fostering stronger connections between food producers and the community.

As part of the Ministry’s mandate to promote local goods, bolster food security, and achieve food self-sufficiency, attendees will be able to purchase fresh pork at the unbeatable price of only $5 per pound, reflecting a significant 50% price reduction. Additionally, smoked pork will be provided by the renowned Ogal Farms, ensuring a variety of locally sourced, premium products for the holiday season.

The addition of pork comes just two months after patrons praised the availability of the product at the Eat Local Fairheld in October as part of World Food Day Week of Activities. The success of that event underscored the demand for high-quality, locally produced pork, encouraging further efforts to highlight and market the local meat at events like the Agri Christmas Night Market. The sale of local pork not only helps to market the product for farmers but also increases public awareness of the quality and availability of locally produced goods. By creating this opportunity, the Ministry is aiding farmers with the expansion of their customer base and businesses.

This initiative also aligns with the Ministry’s broader goals, including the 25 by 25 Agenda, which seeks to reduce food importation by 25% by the year 2025. Promoting local pork and supporting livestock farmers directly contribute to achieving this target, strengthening food security, and fostering self-sufficiency in St. Kitts and Nevis.
