Magistrates impose fines totalling $44,300 on 25 persons for traffic offences heard between January 4 and 24, 2025

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, January 29, 2025 – Fines totalling just over $44,300 were imposed on 25 persons convicted of traffic-related offences committed on St. Kitts.

The fines were imposed during sittings of the Magistrate’s Court during the period January 4th 2025 to January 24th 2025.

According to information $10,900 were imposed on 8 persons during the sittings between January 7th and January 10th 2025.

At the January 16th hearing, the sitting Magistrate imposed fines totalling $10,250 was imposed on six individuals.

The sitting on January 17, 2025, one male individual was ordered by the magistrate to pay a total of $5,400 for several traffic violations.

The person was convicted and fined $1,400.00 forthwith or serve 6 months imprisonment for driving when the proportion of alcohol in the blood exceeded the prescribed limit; convicted and fined $2,000.00 forthwith or serve 4 months imprisonment for driving under the influence of alcohol; convicted and fined $1,000.00 payable within 2 months or serve 1 month imprisonment for driving without due care and attention; convicted and fined $1,000.00 payable within 2 months or serve 2 months imprisonment for driving without insurance, committed on July 23, 2023 and disqualified from holding or obtaining a driver’s license for 6 months

On January 23, 2025, eight persons were ordered to pay a total of $14,900 for violation of the traffic laws.

Seven persons upon conviction were fined a total of $2,850 on January 24th.

The offences ranged from driving without due car and attention, driving an unlicensed vehicle and without insurance. 

Attorney General and Minister of Justice and Legal Affairs, Hon. Garth Wilkin recently disclosed that between 2019 to 2023, there were 6,526 reported traffic accidents in St. Kitts, approximately 1,300 accidents each year.

Of the 6,526 traffic incidents 128 persons sustained serious injuries.

Between December 6, 2024 and January 12, 2025, there have been 8 known road fatalities on St. Kitts
