CFBC STUDENTS TAKE TO THE AIRWAVES FOR READ ALOUD RELAY ON WORLD READ ALOUD DAY
Basseterre, St. Kitts, 7th February 2025 (CFBC): On 5th February 2025, several students from Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College (CFBC) participated in World Read Aloud Day (WRAD) with a Read Aloud Relay on the Morning Show with G-Cue at ZIZ Radio (96.1FM). The students, Vikell Edwards-Douglas, Endira Reeknauth, Tazia Williams, Makalia Tucker, and Kayla Penny, read from “Richard Wright and the Library Card” by William Miller, illustrated by Gregory Christie.
This book tells the inspiring story of young Richard Wright, an African American boy in the Jim Crow-era South, who has a deep hunger for knowledge. Despite the racial segregation that denied him access to books, Richard’s determination leads him to obtain a library card through unconventional means. With this card, he embarks on a secret journey of self-education, reading voraciously and expanding his horizons.
The narrative highlights the transformative power of literature and Richard’s relentless pursuit of knowledge despite facing significant barriers. It underscores the impact of systemic racism and delivers a poignant message about how books can transform lives, providing a sense of freedom and empowerment.
Staff of the CFBC Library led by Director of Library Services, Mrs. Sonita Daniel, organized the Read Aloud Relay and other WRAD activities. The staff includes Ms. Claudia Harvey, Ms. Trevlyn Richards, Ms. Casandra Nesbitt and Ms. Lauritza Harvey, whose dedication, diligence and creativity helped in the successful execution of the activities. “Thank you for joining us in celebrating the power of stories and the joy of reading aloud. We have shared stories, connected with each other, and reaffirmed the importance of literacy in our society,” said Mrs. Daniel.
