PARTICIPANT AND FACILITATOR SHARE KEY INSIGHTS AT UNESCO CYBERSECURITY WORKSHOP
Basseterre, St. Kitts, Wednesday, May 13, 2026: The importance of strengthening digital
awareness among older adults was further underscored during the SIM Caribbean Cybersecurity
for Older Adults Hybrid Workshop hosted by the St. Kitts and Nevis National Commission for
UNESCO on Wednesday, May 13.
While the workshop featured presentations and interactive discussions, remarks from both the
facilitator and participants highlighted the real-life significance of the initiative and the growing
need for digital education among senior citizens.
Ms. Ashley Maynard, Crown Counsel, Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs, highlighted the
importance of increasing participants’ understanding of online offences while encouraging
greater caution and awareness when using digital platforms.
“My purpose here today is to educate the participants about the laws in St. Kitts that govern
cybercrimes and, as a protection, to give them real-world examples of how to protect themselves
and how to be more vigilant when it comes to cybercrimes.”
Ms. Myrtle Tweede-Stephens, participant in the workshop, shared that it provided an opportunity
to better protect herself online while also helping others become more aware of digital threats.
“Knowledge is power, and coming to this workshop will give me an opportunity to learn more
and prevent myself from being scammed by online scammers. Also, to pass on the knowledge
that I will garner here today to others outside, whether young people or elderly people, so that
they can protect themselves in the future from getting scammed.”
The workshop reinforced key lessons through practical discussions and shared experiences,
strengthening participants’ understanding of cybersecurity and encouraging safer engagement in
the digital space moving forward.
