Interim Chapter of WiMAC St. Kitts and Nevis Celebrates International Day for Women in Maritime

18 May 2026

The Interim Chapter of the Women in Maritime Association Caribbean (WiMAC) St. Kitts and Nevis joins the global maritime community in celebrating the International Day for Women in Maritime 2026 under the theme: “From Policy to Practice: Advancing Gender Equality for Maritime Excellence.”

This message was echoed by Ms. Adeola Moore, the first female Chief Executive Officer of the St. Christopher Air and Sea Ports Authority (SCASPA), who reaffirmed SCASPA’s commitment to advancing the participation, leadership, and empowerment of women across the maritime and blue economy sectors.

Ms. Moore also endorsed the continued rollout and implementation of structured support mechanisms through the Interim Chapter of WiMAC St. Kitts and Nevis.

The maritime industry remains a critical pillar of economic growth, trade facilitation, port development, marine services, fisheries, logistics, and regional connectivity. Despite the growing opportunities within the blue economy, women continue to face barriers to entry, advancement, training, mentorship, and representation across marine, port, and maritime professions.

Speaking on the importance of inclusive growth within the sector, Ms. Moore emphasized that sustainable maritime development cannot be achieved without deliberate investment in women.

“The future of the blue economy depends on diversity, innovation, and equal opportunity. Women must be fully represented and supported across all levels of the maritime industry — from ports and shipping to marine operations, logistics, environmental management, and leadership. The establishment and implementation of support systems through the Interim Chapter of WiMAC SKN represents a vital step toward achieving that vision.”

Ms. Moore further acknowledged the important role of the Interim Chapter of WiMAC SKN in creating pathways for mentorship, technical training, advocacy, professional networking, and leadership development for women pursuing careers in the maritime sector.

Ms. Thema Ward, recipient of the Tricia Greaux Ocean Governance Beacon Nevis Award and Lead for the Interim Chapter of WiMAC SKN, also called on all stakeholders — including public and private sector entities, educational institutions, regional maritime bodies, and development partners — to provide sustained support to initiatives aimed at empowering women within the sector.

“This is not the responsibility of one organization alone. We must approach this through a united and strategic effort involving all stakeholders to strengthen the systems that encourage, protect, and elevate women throughout the blue economy. Together, we can build a maritime industry that is more inclusive and resilient.”

As part of the 2026 observance, the Interim Chapter of WiMAC SKN will join the regional WiMAC body in participating in a webinar featuring keynote speaker Ms. Nurul Fitrah of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Gender Network. The webinar will focus on advancing the 2026 theme and strengthening regional dialogue on gender equality within the maritime sector.

The Interim Chapter of WiMAC SKN remains committed to fostering collaboration, leadership, and opportunities for women and girls within the maritime and blue economy sectors across St. Kitts and Nevis.
