MEN URGED TO WAKE-UP AND JOIN HEALTH WALK AND SCREENING FAIR THIS SATURDAY

Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 21, 2024 (SKNIS): Men across St. Kitts are strongly encouraged to go out and participate in the Wake-Up Health Walk and Men’s Health Screening Fair this Saturday, November 23, 2024.

The event, organised as part of the activities for International Men’s Day, begins with the walk starting at the Caribbean Cinema at 6 a.m. Participants will travel along the F. T. Williams Highway to the Moravian Church, down Victoria Road, across Cayon Street, and down Independence Square Street, ending at Independence Square.

After the walk, refreshments will be provided, and free health screenings will be available, including tests for hypertension (blood pressure), diabetes (blood sugar), and prostate health. Urine analysis will also be offered. Mental health counsellors will be present to provide advice and support, as part of the initiative to promote good mental health.

The concept for the health fair was first proposed in July 2024, during the inaugural men’s symposium. Speaking on the November 20 edition of InFocus, Gender Officer, Dion Browne, emphasised that the government is committed to promoting and addressing issues affecting men.

The Walk and Men’s Health Fair is a collaborative venture between the Department of Gender Affairs, the Ministry of Health, and the Department of Community Development.

Dr. Mathias Ofre, who represents the Ministry of Health for this initiative, enlisted the assistance of females on Saturday.

“Each woman, if you have a husband, a son, a boyfriend, ensure to push them out [of the house] on the 23rd (November). It’s important you push them out to ensure that they are out there [learning] to protect themselves and to get their health checked,” emphasising that a healthy man is crucial to both the family structure and society.

The Men’s Health Screening Fair ends at 12 p.m.
