CFBC STUDENTS AND STAFF CELEBRATE WORLD READ ALOUD DAY BY READING TO PRIMARY AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Basseterre, St. Kitts, 6th February 2025 (CFBC): Highlighting the significance of reading aloud to children, 24 students and two staff from the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College (CFBC) visited several high schools and primary schools in Basseterre on 5th February, World Read Aloud Day (WRAD). Their goal was to engage students in the joy of listening to stories read aloud.

Ayanna Blanchard, one of the CFBC student readers, shared that the experience was very positive. She noted that the students were highly engaged with the story and were thrilled to have someone read to them.

Beach Allen Primary School

The CFBC students who participated in the WRAD exercise included Dagenais Daniel, Kymani Phipps, Addel Archibald, Niyanha Edwards, Nishel Blackmoore, Cheyenne Southwell, Iyanna Edinborough, Charlyn Myers, Hannah Williams, Bryanna Edwards, Ayanna Blanchard, Jeya Alexander, Maleek Queeley, Cassandra Otto, Carese Hanley, Lavida Williams, Vikell Edwards-Douglas, Cyanna Johnson, Chereece Antoine, Terez George, Steve Walters Jr., Abiela Thomas, Osei Francis, and D’Gene Dias. They were accompanied by staff members Jemma Williams and Casandra Nisbett.

Halliday-Smith Primary School

Schools visited included the Beach Allen Primary School, Dean Glasford Primary School, Tucker- Clarke Primary School, Dr. William Connor Primary School, Halliday-Smith Primary School, Cotton Thomas Comprehensive School, Basseterre High School, Washington Archibald High School, Immaculate Conception Catholic School, and Montessori School.

Mrs. Sonita Daniel, CFBC Director of Library Services and one of the chief organisers of the WRAD three-event celebration, lauded the effort and energy that were put into the observance.

“What a wonderful celebration of reading aloud by the CFBC! I thank our students, faculty, staff and alumna who made this World Read Aloud Day such a  huge success with our three-event celebration. Thank you for joining us in celebrating the power of stories and the joy of reading aloud,” she said.  

“The interest, enthusiasm and energy demonstrated by all who participated give us the inspiration to continue the work to build a thriving reading culture in our twin island Federation and to promote the importance of reading for lifelong learning and civic engagement,” Mrs. Daniel added.

WRAD is a joyful celebration of storytelling, promoting literacy, fostering a love for reading, building community, boosting confidence, and enhancing cultural exchange. It encourages people of all ages to read aloud to others, highlighting the power of words to connect and inspire us.
