ECDU PROMOTES HEALTHY LIVING WITH FAMILY FITNESS FESTIVAL
Basseterre, St. Kitts, Friday, June 05, 2026: The Early Childhood Development Unit (ECDU)
continued its Child Month 41 celebration with a Family Fitness Festival on Thursday, June 4,
bringing together parents, teachers, and children for an evening dedicated to health, wellness,
and family fun.
The festival encouraged participants to embrace active lifestyles through aerobics, fitness
activities, and interactive exercises designed for children and adults alike. It also provided an
opportunity for families to exercise together while reinforcing the importance of healthy habits
from an early age.
Ms. Julianna Powell, resource teacher, highlighted the purpose of the event and its connection to
this year’s Child Month theme.
“We are here to encourage movement for everyone in St. Kitts and Nevis. We have organized
some aerobics, some fun activities for everyone, the children and the adults. We want everyone
to be able to move and have fun. The event ties in with our theme for this year, which states,
Fueling Our Bodies with the Best! Good Nutrition, Movement, and Rest”.
The Family Fitness Festival was facilitated by Fitness Coach Mr. Wayne Clarke of Down To
Earth Fitness Club, who emphasized the importance of establishing healthy habits early in life.
“It is important to have good nutrition, move the body, and adequate rest from a young age. We
are trying to get parents involved at an early age in making better nutritional choices. The
healthier the food, the better it is for the child. Children and adults need to move, and I am happy
to be here to be a part of this great movement”.
Throughout the event, participants enthusiastically engaged in various physical activities,
demonstrating the importance of movement as a key component of overall health and well-being.
The festival also served as a platform to educate families about the benefits of balanced nutrition,
regular exercise, and adequate rest.
The Family Fitness Festival forms part of the ECDU’s Child Month 41 programme of activities,
which seeks to celebrate children while promoting their holistic development. Through initiatives such as this, the unit continues to encourage families and communities to work together to foster healthy lifestyles and positive habits among the nation’s children.
