EASTERN CARIBBEAN SUPREME COURT CONCLUDES 50 YEAR ANNIVERSARY ACTIVITIES WITH OPEN EXHIBIT IN ST. KITTS AND NEVIS

Basseterre, St. Kitts, March 12, 2018 (SKNIS): The Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (ECSC) concluded its 50 year anniversary celebrations with the opening of a public exhibit on the history of the Supreme Court on March 12 at the Sir Lee L. Moore Judicial and Legal Services Complex, East Independence Square Street, Basseterre. The ECSC was established in 1967.

Attorney General, the Honourable Vincent Byron, said that the exhibit is important for the public to understand how the court system operates.

“One would hope that the citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis do come and have an opportunity to look at what has happened and how the court has functioned as an equal partner of government. The court is an equal partner in keeping the community and society together and making sure that we have a stable and democratic country,” he stated.

The exhibition encompasses biographies of past chief justices; various judicial documents; artifacts and files from the Caribbean Court System. It will be open to the public in St. Kitts from Monday, 12th March to Wednesday, 14th March, 2018 at the Sir Lee L. Moore Judicial and Legal Services Complex. The exhibition then moves to Nevis on Friday, 16th March, 2018.

Chief Justice, Her Ladyship, the Honourable Dame Janice M. Pereira, DBE, encouraged the general public to take advantage of the open exhibition as it has a wealth of information on how the court works.

“It affords the opportunity for the public to gain a fuller appreciation for the work of the court and the way in which the court has developed over the years,” she added.

The ribbon cutting was spearheaded by the Governor General, His Excellency, Sir Tapley Seaton who led the delegation of distinguished guests into the exhibit.

The 50 year anniversary activities began in September 2017 and included the publication of a magazine, mock trial, primary school visits, panel discussions, a health walk and various fund raising activities.

The theme for the 50th Anniversary Celebration is “Celebrating the past, embracing the future.”
