Some achievements of Dr. Asim Martin highlighted
Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 9, 2018 – Some of the achievements of outgoing St. Christopher 1 (East Basseterre) Parliamentary Representative, Dr. Earl Asim Martin, were highlighted Sunday night by former school principal, Dr. Geoffrey Hanley.
At a pre-Labour Day public meeting, at which Dr. Hanley presented an award to Dr. Martin, several of the benefits to the people of the area were documented.
Dr. Hanley noted that the five-term parliamentarian with the financial assistance of the Government and People of the Republic of China (Taiwan) delivered a brand new East Basseterre Community Centre with the vision that it is to serve all the people.
“He brought an end to the dangers posed to all persons accessing the south east peninsular road by building a tunnel on Timothy Hill. Falling Rocks no longer threaten us. That was the visionary hard work of Dr. Martin,” said Dr. Hanley, who pointed out that while others opened it “it was Martin and Labour who built it and delivered it for our people.”
He said also that Dr. Martin has worked hard in the interest of the residents and has seen more than six hundred East Basseterre families move into their own homes. “My wife and children are one such family and we join with all the families to say, “Thank You, Dr. Martin. Your work on our behalf is greatly appreciated.”
He said Dr. Martin may be recorded as the most visionary Minister of Public Utilities in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.
“It was Dr. Martin who brought us great improvements in the delivery of electricity supply and distribution as he moved us away from the electricity department and gave us a more efficient SKELEC. Do you remember the Petro-Caribe Agreement that helped make fuel prices more affordable at a time when oil prices went through the roof? Earl Asim Martin was an instrumental part of that team that helped to lower our electricity prices as a result of that agreement.”
“And when that alone was not enough, He undertook with the help of the Government of Cuba, the LED light exchange which to this day brings us further savings to our electricity bills. Yes Comrades, his record tells me that Dr. Earl Asim Martin, the former Deputy prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis and the present deputy leader of the great St., Kitts and Nevis Labour Party, is a man who cares about people for every step of the way, he has carefully implemented programmes that have significantly improved our lives in every way.”
Dr. Martin also delivered St. Kitts’ two solar farms at the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport and the Frigate Bay Road; the Basseterre Fisheries Complex, the upgrades of public infrastructure, new housing developments at Bladens, Taylors, and Gillard Meadows, expansion of the Dental Unit and New Town Clinic and miles of resurfaced roads including the full length of the Dr. Kennedy Simmonds Highway.
.
During his tenure Dr. Martin’s representation also saw the construction in the constituency of several hotel and condominium projects via the Citizenship by Investment programme. These included Christophe Harbour, Christophe Harbour Marina, Koi Sales Office, Silver Reef Resort and Residences, St. Kitts Castle, St. Kitts Marriott Resort & Royal Beach Casino, Ocean Edge, Rendezvous, and Imperial Bay Golf & Beach Residences.
Some projects still under construction include Koi Residences, Golden Rock Commercial Park and T-Loft (Radisson).
The upgrade and world-wide popularity of the Strip at Frigate Bay, the expansion and renovation of the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport, which has attracted international flights from Europe and North America, the completion of Port Zante which now accommodate nearly one million cruise ship passengers and the construction of all its buildings; the lighting of the Kim Collins Highway and the exemption of taxes on LED lights.
The construction of the Kim Collins Athletics Track, the upgrade of Warner Park Cricket Stadium, the Football Stadium and the Pam Tyson Netball Stadium, the expansion of the Basseterre High School.
As Minister of Public Works, Dr. Martin has also ensured the construction and renovation of new Day Care Centres and Community Centres in Central Basseterre, West Basseterre, Challengers, Old Road, Sandy Point, Newton Ground, St. Paul’s, Dieppe Bay, Saddlers, Molinuex, Tabernacle, Cayon and Conaree.
