BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, September 26, 2018 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris’ busy schedule of engagements on the fringe of the 73rdSession of the United Nations General Assembly in New York City continued early today with a meeting with his colleague Prime Minister of St. Maarten, Leona Romeo-Marlin.

During that meeting, the two Caribbean leaders discussed matters of mutual interests, including the strengthening of bilateral cooperation.

Upon invitation, Prime Minister Harris also attended a summit-level meeting of the United Nations Security Council chaired by United States President Donald Trump. That meeting sought to address counter-proliferation efforts – a broad theme that includes denuclearization of North Korea, Iran’s nuclear and missile technology capabilities, and chemical weapons in Syria.

Following his participation in the UN Security Council meeting, the St. Kitts and Nevis delegation of Prime Minister Harris; Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister, Mr. Osbert DeSuza; Senior Foreign Service Officer/Counselor at the Permanent Mission of St. Kitts and Nevis to the United Nations, Ms. Ghislaine Williams; Director in the Office of the Prime Minister, Ms. Chelesa Rawlins, and Officer at the Permanent Mission of St. Kitts and Nevis, Ms. Asha DeSuza visited the recently unveiled Nelson Mandela statue at the UN Headquarters.

The life-size statue of the South African leader was unveiled at the United Nations on the occasion of Mr. Mandela’s 100th birth anniversary. The visit to Mr. Mandela’s statue held special significance to Prime Minister Harris, whose own administration unveiled life-size statues of St. Kitts and Nevis’ five National Heroes at the historic National Heroes Park just over a week ago on September 17.

On Thursday, September 27, the St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister, as lead Head for Health and Human Development in the CARICOM Quasi Cabinet, is scheduled to attend a number of health related meetings.

This includes a CARICOM Heads side event on non-communicable diseases (NCDs), focusing on the topic, “Moving Caribbean people towards healthier lives: Step it up”. Prime Minister Harris will chair that event.

Later that same morning, Dr. Harris will chair a panel during a high-level multi-stakeholder meeting that will address the topic, “Strengthening health systems and financing for the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) on each country’s path towards achieving universal health, including through sharing evidence-based best practices, scientific knowledge and lessons learned.”

The Honourable Prime Minister is also expected to attend and speak at a World Health Organization (WHO) event to be held under the theme, “Time to Deliver: Combating NCDs is a Political Choice.”

Furthermore, while in New York, Prime Minister Harris will also pursue a series of bilateral and multilateral engagements on the margins of the UN General Assembly. Additionally, Dr. Harris is expected to hold discussions with potential investors as he promotes St. Kitts and Nevis as the best place for business.

On Thursday evening, Prime Minister Harris will attend a 35th Anniversary of Independence Gala at Eastwood Manor, 3371 Eastchester Rd, Bronx, New York, starting at 7pm. There, the Honourable Prime Minister will mingle and hold consultations with nationals living in the diaspora.
