Saint Lucia Police Join Anti Crime Offensive in St Kitts & Nevis
Six members of the Special Services Unit (SSU) of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) left here Wednesday to join officers from the Regional Security System (RSS), now in St Kitts and Nevis to assist in the battle against crime.
According to media reports in the twin Island Federation, thirty-five RSS officers were sworn in Thursday as Special Constables in the fight against crime there.
The six Saint Lucian officers, some of whom are understood to have been recalled from vacation leave, are expected to spend three weeks in St Kitts and Nevis in the first instance, Acting Police Commissioner, Milton Desir, told St Lucia Times.
The local officers were dispatched to assist St Kitts and Nevis against the backdrop of reports that the country has been experiencing an unprecedented crime wave that includes shootings, murders and armed robberies.
The St. Kitts and Nevis Chamber of Industry and Commerce recently acknowledged that crime had reached a new and dangerous level, threatening the peace and stability of the federation and its economy.
There have been more than 20 murders reported for the year so far.
