While speaking about Sugar Mas 47 on the Government’s Weekly Programme, “Working For You”, on October 18, Mr. Mills said the objective of the convention is to look at best practices throughout the region with respect to Carnival so that a unified approach towards the festival could be arrived at.
“Every year there is criticism as to the judging pool and who is finally selected,” said Mr. Mills, as he noted that this year the committee is seeking feedback from calypsonians and other carnival stakeholders on recommendations for judges, who will now have to undergo a compulsory series of extensive training involving local and regional facilitators.
He highlighted that the “Four C’s” will also try to market the Caribbean as a “Carnival junkie destination” and get travel agents and airlines involved to offer promotions for Carnival travel packages.
According to the Carnival chairman, the committee intends to set up a system where winners can confirm performances in other regional festivals throughout the region.
“I have already started the ball rolling on this concept where the minister and I have counterparts in Barbados,” he said, while noting that a Carnival winner from Nevis was able to travel to Barbados to take part in its Carnival over the summer.
