Sharon Cannonier, Youth Officer in the Department of Youth Empowerment, said that January is an important month for the programme. This is because they are conducting volunteer registration and accepting requests for volunteers from individuals or non-profit organizations to execute projects that will benefit a worthy cause.
For registrants, persons have up until Thursday, January 31, 2019, to sign up. This can be done at the department’s office on the top floor of The Cable Building. After filling out a registration form, the individuals will attend an orientation and training session in February where they will learn about the programme, the value of volunteering and other benefits. Ms. Cannonier stressed that anyone can register to join the corps.
With the date for orientation and training fast approaching, the youth officer said that requests for volunteers should be submitted as early as possible. Projects can include beautification campaigns, packing and distributing food hampers, hosting social functions for the underprivileged or vulnerable groups and the like.
Officials expect an increase in the number of requests this year, particularly in February 2019 when the 2nd Annual National Volunteer Day is scheduled.
Ms Cannonier emphasized that the projects must serve to uplift the community and residents within. For additional information contact the Department of Youth Empowerment at 467-1393.
