The official funeral service for the late Mr Richard Llewellyn Caines, Sr, JP, CSM will take place on Saturday August 29 at 1:00 pm at the Warner Park Stadium.
The late Mr Caines, who served as Junior Minister of Finance in the People’s Action Movement (PAM) Administration under Federation’s first Prime Minister the Hon Dr Kennedy Simmonds, and who was a successful businessman, died shortly after 11:00 pm on July 27, 2020. He was 87 years old.
In mourning the passing of Mr Richard Caines, Prime Minister Dr the Hon Timothy Harris said the late politician and businessman was a great inspiration to many people of all ages, both personally and professionally.
“He was a very successful businessman, a gentleman, a humanitarian and philanthropist extraordinaire, who was humble, decent, and a sincere and dependable friend to those who were blessed to have him in their lives,” said Prime Minister Harris on Tuesday July 28.
The Honourable Prime Minister added that he cherished Richard Caines’ friendship and valued his wise counsel, which resulted in their engaging in long talks about life, leadership and the country.
“I will miss him immensely, but I am heartened that he died peacefully, surrounded by the love and presence of his family – some of whom had come home to be with him in his final days. May his soul rest in peace, knowing how deeply and widely he was loved and admired,” concluded the Prime Minister.
At his monthly Press Conference held at the NEMA Headquarters conference room on Tuesday August 11, Prime Minister Harris announced that the Late Mr Caines will be accorded an official funeral.
Mr Caines was a true patriot to the very end as even in poor health and in a wheelchair he attended the state opening of the new parliament, after the June 5 Election, on Wednesday July 8 which was held at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort where he had brief discussions with Prime Minister Harris and other officials.
According to Ms Joy Caines, one of the seven children of the Late Mr Caines, viewing of the body will take place on Friday August 28 at the R. L. Caines Building on Princes Street in downtown Basseterre from 11:00 am to 5:30 pm. After the official funeral service on Saturday at the Warner Park Stadium, interment will be at the Springfield Cemetery.
A book of condolence will be placed at the Government Headquarters on Church Street in Basseterre for members of the public to sign from Thursday August 27 to Friday August 28 between the hours of 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.
Persons from Nevis, where Mr Caines had a second home, wishing to attend the official funeral the M.V. Mark Twain will leave Nevis at 12:00 noon on Saturday August 29 and depart St. Kitts 30 minutes after the burial.
Richard Llewellyn Caines, Sr, JP, CSM who resided at Greenlands in Basseterre will be greatly missed and for ever remembered by his seven children, Mrs Inez Caines-Brown, Mr Conrod Caines, Ms Gigi Caines, Mr Scott Caines, Mr Collin Caines, Mr Richard Caines Jr., and Ms Joy Caines.
Others are his three sisters, Dr Ismay Taylor, Mrs Clarice Michael, and Mrs Adina Payne; two brothers, Mr Pronstiel Caines, and Mr Charles Caines; fifteen grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild. Other close family members include two sons-in-law, one daughter-in-law, two sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law, thirty-four nieces and nephews, and several God-children.
