A Five Year Seat at the Table
Today marks five years since I first assumed my role in the National Assembly of St.Christopher and Nevis, as Deputy Clerk, before being promoted to Clerk, one year later. I am truly grateful to have this front seat at the table, to administratively play a critical role in the legislative process and facilitate the passage of important laws, for the benefit of my country.
I had never envisioned that this would become part of my professional journey, when I pursued a Masters in Public Administration and completed a dissertation on the Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee situation in St.Kitts and Nevis, in fulfillment of that degree in 2012. However, I thank God for recognizing my skills and ability, and opening this door of opportunity. It has been an absolutely transformational journey, that has certainly expanded my knowledge on issues of statecraft, governance and democracy.
I am also appreciative of the many opportunities, this role has afforded me to improve my public image, oratory and debating skills, as well as to further build my self- confidence. I also cannot down play how much my professional network has expanded locally, regionally and internationally, as a result of this job. I am súper elated that during my tenure I was able to serve as the Conference Coordinator, for the successful staging of the 42nd Regional Conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, the Caribbean, the Americas and the Atlantic region.
I am also proud of the fact, that I was able to spearhead the Opening of the New Session of Parliament, in a new location, in 2020, during a pandemic. I am equally delighted that I have not just sat quietly or comfortably, but I have contributed significantly to the modernization of the Parliamentary practises and procedures and served as a strong advocate for the inclusive participation of our National Youth parliamentarians in regional and international events, amongst other things. The Sonia Boddie who nervously walked into the Chambers five years ago, is definitely not the same one writing this message, because of the outpouring of love, support and guidance, I have received from my Creator, my family, friends, the Speaker, Members of Parliament, colleagues and the amazing members of the general public, who never shy away from providing commendations and constructive criticism, that has helped me to mature personally and professionally.
I wholeheartedly, thank each and everyone for bearing me up and keeping me grounded, because as you would imagine, it is not always easy being on live TV, sitting for extended hours, in a sometimes very tense environment, with a very composed faced(Big grin), but I have done it, thanks to the unwavering support of everyone. You may be wondering, how I would be celebrating this milestone. I will be celebrating by doing a training session with Youth parliamentarians this evening. To God be the Glory, for things he hath done.
