WEEK OF ACTIVITIES PLANNED IN OBSERVANCE OF WORLD CONSUMER RIGHTS DAY 2023
Theme: EMPOWERING CONSUMERS THROUGH THE TRANSITION
To commemorate World Consumer Rights Day is observed annually on March 15, the Department of Consumer Affairs has planned a Week of Activities, explained Communication Officer, Ms Tricia Rawlins, during an interview with Buckie Got It Media.
Ms Rawlins highlighted some of the major activities planned. She excitingly announced that the week of activities will begin with a Praise and Worship service on March 12 at the Roman Catholic Church at 8:30am. The minister’s speech by the Right Honourable Dr. Denzil L Douglas Minister of Foreign affairs, International Trade, Industry, Commerce and Consumer Affairs, Economic Development and Investment will be aired on ZIZ radio.
On Monday 13th March, officers from the department will appear various radio stations: ZIZ from10:15am to 10:30am, Freedom FM from 10:00am from10:30am and Winn FM from11:00am to 12.:00pm.
Wednesday 14 March the department will launch its “Consumer Education for kids “program at St Pauls Primary, Saddlers Primary and Dr William Connor Primary School.
The Charleton Edwards Memorial Consumer Affairs Department Primary School Quiz Finals will take place on the March 15 at the CUNA Caribbean Conference Center at 5pm. This event will be broadcast live on social media.
March 16 will be dubbed as Business Appreciation Day; on this day staff will be going to various business establishments to distribute Certificates of Appreciation to strengthen the Department relationship with the business places.
Ms Rawlins encourages the public, wherever possible, to support the various activities for World Consumer Rights Day and also Consumer Awareness Week 2023.
“We remind everyone that we are all consumers of goods and services produced, marketed, sold, and bought in our Federation,” she said. “As such, consumer protection and consumer rights constitute everybody’s business.”
She noted that the department believes that an informed consumer is also an empowered consumer and, as such, the department is serious in its mission and mandate to protect the rights of all consumers.
“We continue to encourage the public to feel free to report any perceived instances of consumer rights’ infringements and, that once reported, such instances will be fully investigated with a view to satisfactory redress,” she said.
World Consumer Rights Day is being celebrated under the theme: “ EMPOWERING CONSUMERS THROUGH THE TRANSITION ”.
