We offer our deepest condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of the late Michael Heyliger, also known as Mick Stokes or Uncle Mick. The passing of such a legendary figure in the carnival world fills our hearts with profound sadness.
Mick Stokes began his journey in the world of entertainment at a young age, starting as a limbo dancer. As a preteen, he fearlessly showcased his singing talent on a popular radio show, introducing original tunes like “Jumping Jacks” and “Too Young.” These early moments marked a significant turning point in his artistic path.
Throughout his remarkable musical career, Mick Stokes always captivated audiences with his infectious energy. As a member of esteemed groups such as Ellie Matt & The GIs Brass, GIs Brass International, De Brass, Tunka And Friends (St. Maarten) and Vinomar Sonics (Virgin Gorda), his dynamic presence elevated performances to extraordinary heights. Additionally, he contributed his talents to Ashanti, Legends Band, Four Play, Royaltiez and Rhapsody.
Mick Stokes’ discography boasts an impressive collection of classics, many of which have become integral to our carnival culture: Music In Jail, Liamuiga Calling, One Short Man, She’s Not There, All Kinda Tings, Play One More For Me, Play de Sweet Music, Cold And Rainy Days, Try A Little Kindness, Sam Browne, A Got Another Life, Cool Breeze, Beat De Drums, Noisy Neighbour, Winner, Where Is The Love, Nobody Love, That’s Magnificent, Darling Donna, Nelson Mandela Is Free, Bounce, Free Up, We Independent and so many more.
Notably, Mick Stokes won the Carnival Road March title with “All Kind A Tings” for the 1991/92 carnival.
Beyond his musical contributions, Mick Stokes also graced the airwaves as host of the popular show National Showcase on ZIZ Radio. Through this program, he celebrated local hits and kept the vibrant spirit of carnival alive throughout the entire year, not just during the carnival period.
In recognition of his profound impact on the music industry and his unwavering commitment in promoting our rich musical heritage,
Mick Stokes was honored with the St. Kitts-Nevis Medal of Honor.
Mick Stokes’ final carnival performance was a truly momentous occasion during the 50th anniversary celebrations. His iconic show at ICONS || Road March edition will forever hold a special place in our hearts.
