Labour Party chairman Liburd says arrest of
Wingrove George is “strictly vindictive politics”
Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 19, 2017 – Chairman of the opposition St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP), Hon. Marcella Liburd is baffled by the arrest and charge of former Supervisor of Elections, Wingrove George.
No. 710 Cpl Jerry Watt alleges in separate charges that George “having received the results from the Returning Officer for Constituency # 4 and the Returning Officer for Constituency # 8, without reasonable explanation or justification, you failed to carry out your duty to ensure that the announcements of the election results for Constituency number 4 and Constituency number 8 were done in a timely manner by suspending the announcements of the election results and failed to take any or any proper steps to ensure the timely announcement of the election results for Constituency number 4 and Constituency number 8 contrary to Common Law.”
Liburd, who is also the Parliamentary Representative for St. Christopher #2 (Central Basseterre) told SKNVibes that she has not heard of anyone ever being slapped with such a charge in St. Kitts and Nevis.
“I have never in my lifetime heard anyone being charged with anything to do with that. The alleged charges that I saw, spoke to the fact that he didn’t make the announcement for Constituencies Four and Eight, in a timely manner,” she said.
Liburd, a lawyer and a former government minister raised several questions about the charge.
“If what they are saying is true; are they saying that number four and eight should really not be in the parliament? But really, from what I say, the charges said that it is misconduct in that he did not make the announcement for Constituency four and eight in a timely manner.”
She is of the view that the arrest of George “is strictly vindictive politics.”

“Because if that is the charge in that he did not make the announcement in timely manner…it is vindictive. That was almost three years ago.
