U.S. AMBASSADOR VISITS BAYFORDS LAYER CHICKEN BREEDER FARM AND HATCHERY IN ST. KITTS AHEAD OF OFFICIAL OPENING
(MOA Basseterre, St. Kitts, 30 October 2024):
In a significant step to strengthen agricultural sustainability, His Excellency Roger F. Nyhus, Ambassador of the United States of America to Saint Kitts and Nevis, visited the Saint Kitts and Nevis Layer Chicken Industry Sustainable Development Project at the Bayfords Livestock Centre of Excellence on 16 October 2024.
The Ambassador was accompanied by a 6-member delegation, inclusive of Deputy Assistant Secretary of the United States Department of State, Mrs. Barbara Feinstein, and Deputy Assistant Secretary of the United States Department of State, Mr. Mark Lambert. This visit demonstrated the Federation’s ongoing efforts to transform its agricultural sector.
Also in attendance were His Excellency Michael Lin, Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and Mr. Miguel Flemming, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, who aided in highlighting the cooperative efforts undertaken between Saint Kitts and Nevis and the Republic of China (Taiwan) which have played an essential role in bringing this initiative into fruition. Together, they toured the facilities and were briefed by the Taiwan Technical Mission on the project’s progress and its anticipated impact on the country’s agricultural sector
The Bayfords Chicken Hatchery Project is a crucial initiative to reduce the country’s reliance on imported day-old chicks and eggs by fostering local egg production. The construction of the facility is set to be commissioned officially on 31 October 2024.
In reflection on his tour, Ambassador Nyhus expressed his admiration for the project’s potential to contribute to regional food security and sustainable agricultural practices.
With the official commissioning date approaching, the facility symbolizes the Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis’ commitment to reducing food imports and promoting sustainable agricultural practices for the betterment of its people.
