FORMER BASSETERRE HIGH SCHOOL (BHS) ALSO SITS ON BASSETERRE VALLEY AQUIFER
Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 12, 2018 (SKNIS): The former Basseterre High School (BHS), located at Victoria Road, Basseterre, sits on the Basseterre Valley Aquifer. The soon to be built state-of-the-art BHS at Pond’s Extension in East Basseterre will also be built on the Basseterre Valley Aquifer. So, what is the controversy?

Some claim that the Basseterre Valley Aquifer will be contaminated by the building of the new BHS on it, while respected experts in the field, including a group of top experienced water engineers, who did the feasibility studies, say that the water contamination risk is literally non-existent.

GOVERNMENT TO GRADUALLY REPURCHASE LANDS SOLD UNDER CONTROVERSIAL LAND-FOR-DEBT SWAP

 

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, December 12, 2018 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis has announced its intention to gradually repurchase portions of the lands sold under the controversial Land-for-Debt Swap arrangement initiated by the former Denzil Douglas Administration.

In 2012, former Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas presented and piloted the St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla National Bank Limited (Vesting of Certain Lands) Bill, 2012, in the National Assembly, which provided for the vesting of 1,200 acres of government land to the St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla National Bank to settle $900 million of debt with the bank. The Bill was passed on September 21, 2012.

AMBITIOUS REFORM AGENDA IN THE HEALTH SECTOR BEING EXECUTED BY GOVERNMENT OF ST. KITTS-NEVIS
Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 12, 2018 (SKNIS): The Team Unity Administration, guided by the National Strategic Plan for Health 2017-2021, is taking proactive steps to address the increasing threat and burden of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in the Federation.

While delivering the 2019 Budget Address on December 12, Prime Minister, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, said that to curb the proliferation of NCDs, the government is implementing several initiatives including the development of a National Multi-sectoral Plan for the Prevention and Control of NCDs in St. Kitts and Nevis for the period 2018-2022.

STATISTICS REVEAL THAT SERIOUS CRIMES IN ST. KITTS-NEVIS HAVE FALLEN IN CCTV COVERED AREAS
Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 12, 2018 (SKNIS): The effectiveness of the Closed Circuit Television Surveillance System Project in deterring crime was highlighted on Wednesday, December 12, 2018, by Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris.

During today’s Budget Debate in the Federal Parliament, Dr. Harris shared: “I am advised Mr. Speaker, that we have had significant reductions in crimes in certain areas. For example, I am advised that in the gun related areas where the cameras have been [installed], we saw a reduction [in serious crimes] from 33 in 2016, to 19 in 2017, representing a 42.4% reduction, and we have had five such incidences recorded in the run up for the period so far,” the prime minister said, comparing the 2017 to 2018 period.

The Team Unity administration proposes to spend $772.9 million in 2019 to support the implementation of various programmes and projects intended “to improve the delivery of public service, contribute to increasing growth in our economy, and improve the lives of all the people of St. Christopher and Nevis,” Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris said today, Wednesday, December 12th, 2018.

Delivering his 2019 Budget Address at a sitting of the National Assembly, the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis also said, “This budget debate must be about how we are enhancing the quality of life for the ordinary people.”
