West Basseterre MP Konris Maynard accuses Speaker Perkins of muzzling him in the National Assembly.

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, May 24th 2017 – The youngest member of the St. Kitts and Nevis National Assembly, Hon. Konris Maynard who was ejected from a meeting of the National Assembly on Tuesday has again accused the controversial Speaker Hon. Michael Perkins of “stifling democracy” of “aligned to the government” and “having an agenda.”

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, May 24th 2017 – As healthcare in St. Kitts continues to deteriorate, an appeal has been made to the authorities to deal with the thick black smoke coming from the incinerator at the J. N. France General Hospital.

Neighbours in the area have been complaining recently about the black smoke from the new incinerator installed in 2014 for the proper disposal of waste. The new incinerator was among several new equipment purchased and installed in the radiology, laboratory, Catscan, and dialysis units.

What did the Motion of the No Confidence filed on December 13th against Speaker Michael Perkins say?

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, May 23rd 2017 – Judging from the behaviour of the Speaker of the National Assembly, Mr. Michael Perkins, it is evident that he will continue his crusade to stifle democracy in the lawmaking body.

History was made in St. Kitts and Nevis a few months ago when the Speaker Perkins refused to allow debate of an opposition Motion of No Confidence against him.

The Speaker Perkins was accused of “holding himself as judge, jury, and executioner in refusing to allow debate on the Motion of No Confidence filed by the parliamentary opposition against him” on January 20th 2017.

Tuesday’s rulings by the Speaker are evidence that Mr. Perkins does not intend to allow the five opposition members to debate the issues in the Parliament.

Michael Perkins, shut down references about Chinese fugitive, Ren Biao, when Leader of the Opposition, the Right Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas questioned the commitment of the Team Unity Government to its regional and international obligations.

Dr. Douglas questioned the government’s commitment to important legislation in bringing two pieces of legislation for debate at Tuesday’s sitting when they were given a first reading 8 months ago.

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, MAY 23RD 2017 – Today May 23rd 2017 marks the 39th anniversary of the death of First National Hero, Second Chief Minister, First Premier and Father of St. Kitts and Nevis’ Independence, The Right Excellent Sir Robert L. Bradshaw.

It was at 11:30 P.M. on May 23rd 1978, surrounded by close family, Cabinet colleagues, Labour Party officials and close and trusted friends, that Premier Bradshaw died at his home at Fortlands, Basseterre, St. Kitts.
