VIDEO: 4 confirmed dead in Highway 2000 crash

The police are reporting that two unidentified males and two unidentified females have succumbed to injuries received in a motor vehicle accident along the PJ Patterson Highway — the Kingston to May Pen leg of Highway 2000 — on Monday.

“We are able to confirm that four persons have died,” head of the Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, Senior Superintendent of Police Gary McKenzie told Loop News.

“There are a number of persons that have been taken to the Spanish Town Hospital, and we have heard that a few of them are critical… a number of them are [also] seriously injured,” he added.

Reports from the Spanish Town police are that about 11am, a Toyota Hiace bus was travelling towards Kingston when it is alleged that one of the tyres blew out. The driver of the Hiace, which was being operated as a public passenger vehicle, lost control of the bus and collided with a motor truck before it overturned several times and crashed into the median.

Eleven other occupants of the bus were transported to hospital in serious condition.

Livestock and crop farmers reported Monday the early impact of the La Soufriere volcanic eruption’s fallout, hoping that the long-term effects will not be significant.

Farmers in the north of the island were more seriously affected by heavy ashfall over three days. Anselm Greene, a farmer on the Spring Hall Land Lease project said the ashfall has been catastrophic to his crops, fearing the long-term effect on crops as plants cannot produce when stifled by dust.

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) which is still battling the COVID-19 pandemic is now fighting against volcanic ash which has led to a major cleanup at the facility.

QEH’s Executive Chairman Juliette Bynoe-Sutherland told Barbados TODAY that the hospital has been heavily impacted by the ash which Barbadians woke up to on Saturday following the eruption of the La Soufriere volcano in St Vincent.

As bus drivers around Dominica embark on protest action, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has made it clear to them that neither he, nor his government, will be extorted.

Several bus drivers began protest action this morning, refusing to ply their their regular route and leaving large numbers of commuters stranded. The bus operators say they are protesting to force the government to provide  “much-needed assistance” because of the financial impact of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the recent rise in the price of fuel on their trade.
