US$5 million loan from SIDF helps OTI stand out as Caribbean leader in sustainable tourism

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, JUNE 14TH 2017 – A US$5 million loan from the St. Kitts and Nevis Sugar Industry Diversification Foundation (SIDF) in 2013 assisted St. Kitts’ Ocean Terrace Inn (OTI) to stand out in the Caribbean as a leader in sustainable tourism.

OTI was the runner up for the Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association’s (CHTA) Environmental Sustainability Award.

Chris Ghita, General Manager of OTI accepted the award on behalf of the property at CHTA’s CHIEF (Caribbean Hospitality Industry Exchange Forum) Opening Ceremony on June 2, 2017, at the Hyatt Regency in Miami, Florida.

PM Harris’ move to increase penalties for gun crimes does little to change perception government lacks seriousness

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, JUNE 12th 2017 – Two St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party parliamentarians say increasing the maximum penalty for incarceration for non-capital gun crimes from 10 years to 15 years will not alone solve the Federation’s growing crime problem.

 Stating he has no serious objection to the Firearms Amendment Bill 2017 that proposes an increase in penalties for criminals convicted of offences, Sen. Nigel Carty expressed the view that the Team Unity Government brought the legislation as the linchpin of its crime reduction strategy.

Several Bills will come before the House, some for their first reading and others for their second reading.

The Honourable Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Sustainable Development, National Security, People Empowerment and Constituency Empowerment, Dr. Timothy Harris, will seek leave to introduce and have read a first time Public Accounts Committee Bill and Saint Christopher and Nevis Citizenship (CBI Escrow Accounts) Bill.
