ROAD REHABILITATION RPOJECT ENHANCES SAFETY FOR DRIVERS AND PEDESTRIANS IN ST. KITTS
Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 20, 2019 (SKNIS): The completion of Phase 1 of the rehabilitation of the island’s main road in St. Kitts has made the commuting experience for persons travelling between Conaree and Keys, as well as Camps and Challengers, a more enjoyable experience, but more importantly a safer commute.

Under Phase 1, the resurfacing of the abovementioned stretch of road was done by Surrey Paving and Aggregate Co. Ltd. Local contractors such as Allie’s Construction, B & B Backhoe and Trucking Services, Boonie’s Construction, O’Loughlin Construction, and Huggins and Son Construction, also undertook various work that resulted in the construction of a proper drainage system on the eastern side of St. Kitts in the vicinity of CONTEC, the widening of the main road, as well as the building of drains, retention walls and sidewalks at various points.

POVERTY ALLEVIATION PROGRAMME TO IMPROVE SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS IN THE FEDERATION, SAYS PM HARRIS
Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 20, 2019 (SKNIS): The historic Poverty Alleviation Programme, which was launched on December 24, 2018, has now dispersed its second payment to over 3,500 residents in St. Kitts and Nevis who are breathing a sigh of relief for the much-needed fiscal assistance. The programme is designed to improve the socio-economic status in the Federation.

On February 20, while speaking at a sitting of National Assembly, Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris said that the programme is an important promise made by his administration and noted that, “we have done great so far to move this programme along as part of a comprehensive effort to reduce and eventually eradicate abject poverty in our Federation.”

“On Christmas Eve, December 24, 2018, this programme was launched at the convenient location of Independence Square in the full view of all and in the sunshine of transparency that we have brought to the government,” said Prime Minister Harris.

Mr. Speaker, Sir, on April 5th, 2017, the Cabinet announced the establishment of a National Marijuana Commission, to consult with the public and enquire into the wide-ranging issues surrounding Marijuana use in the Federation and to provide recommendations on the way forward.

I am pleased to report that the Commission, which began its work on October 5th, 2017, presented its report to the Office of the Prime Minister on January 10th, 2019, some 15 months later.

Cabinet on Monday, February 18th, 2019 deliberated on the report and engaged the Commissioners on said Report. The Commission comprises of:

LAW ENFORCEMENT WILL WIN SAYS ACP MITCHELL

 

Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 20, 2019 (RSCNPF): Assistant Commissioner of Police with responsibility for Crime, Andre Mitchell, stated firmly that the Police must show the criminals that law enforcement will win.

“We, as the principal law enforcement entity, must respond in partnership with other agencies like…the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force and the Customs [Department]. We must respond and respond we shall,” ACP Mitchell said.

He also spoke of the importance of the public’s involvement, adding that everyone needed to join the fight against wrongdoing.

“We’re dealing with a very dire situation. We are dealing with persons who are living amongst us who are very unconscionable.”

The ACP for the Crime Directorate said that these were very extraordinary times which required the Police to implement extraordinary measures to address what was happening on the ground. He thanked all Officers for their commitment to service and encouraged them to continue giving of their best.

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, February 20, 2019 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – The Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris-led Team Unity administration has accepted more than a dozen broad-based recommendations presented by the St. Kitts & Nevis (National) Marijuana Commission in its final report to the Cabinet on the way forward for the use of marijuana in the country.
