MP Liburd welcomes British PM apology; commends High Commissioner Isaac

Basseterre, St. Kitts, April 18, 2018 – Chairperson of the opposition St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP), Hon. Marcella Liburd although strongly condemning the British Government in the Windrush matter has welcomed the apology of Prime Minister the Right Hon. Theresa May.

“We express our strongest condemnation. This is diabolical and heartless. We of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party express our strongest condemnation. We are very much concerned that persons who have lived and worked in the UK for over 50 and 60 years and who have paid taxes are being denied access to healthcare, their pensions and are being put out of their jobs, This is really an injustice that is being perpetrated against Caribbean nationals, many of them who answered the call to help build England following World War 2,” said Liburd during a radio programme of Freedom 106.5 FM on Wednesday.

Liburd, the Member of Parliament for St. Christopher 2 (Central Basseterre) praised the advocacy for justice led by the St. Kitts and Nevis High Commissioner in London, His Excellency Dr. Kevin Isaac and other colleague High Commissioners from the Caribbean.

“I welcome the apology from Prime Minister Theresa May. I sincerely hope that her assurances and corrective measures will help to alleviate the humiliation, the pain, the suffering and trauma experienced by so many of our Caribbean nationals including many from St. Kitts and Nevis,” said Liburd.

Thousands of West Indians who journeyed to the United Kingdom in the 1950s and 1960s were threatened with deportation.
