Man drinks beer full of dead geckos: suit
A California man filed a stomach-turning lawsuit against Heineken beer and Kroger supermarket — claiming he sipped suds loaded with dead, canned geckos.
George Toubbeh said he got violently ill and “suffered from extreme anxiety and post traumatic stress disorder” from the beer he purchased and drank on Aug. 7, 2015, according to his lawsuit filed in Orange County Superior Court.
“Plaintiff consumed the Heineken beer and noted that the beer had a foul taste,” his lawyer Zahra Aziz wrote. “Immediately thereafter, plaintiff experiences severe abdominal pain followed by vomiting,”
Later, Toubbeh’s daughter allegedly made the disgusting find, according to the lawsuit filed this past Friday.
“Plaintiff’s daughter examined the contents of the Heineken can that her father was drinking from and found two dead geckos in the Heineken beer can,” Aziz wrote.
The dead lizards were fresh, lawyers said, meaning they must have slipped into a bottling plant and were alive when they were sealed in.
“When discovered, the geckos had not been decomposed at all and were likely alive when the beer was poured and sealed into the cans in the bottling and/or canning facility,” Toubbeh’s lawsuit claimed.
“Based upon information and belief, the subject geckos likely got into the Heineken canning facility and into a can before the Heineken beer was poured and the top was sealed.”
The offending beer was purchased in Fountain Valley at a Ralph’s – the California regional market of Cincinnati-based Kroger.
Heineken and Kroger are both named as defendants.
Heineken USA, the American subsidiary of the famed Dutch brewers, insisted this didn’t happen.
“Heineken USA holds the safety and integrity of the products we import to the highest standards,” according to a company statement. “We have investigated this isolated claim and based on a number of factors we confidently believe there is no merit to this claim.”
A rep for Ralph’s and Kroger did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment on Wednesday.
