Gayle, Samuels in West Indies ODI squad, while Trinis snub selectors
Jamaicans Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels have been included in a 15-member West Indies squad that has been named to play England in a five-match One Day International (ODI) series in September, following the ongoing three-Test series.
But three other regional stars, Trinidadian brothers Dwayne and Darren Bravo, and countryman Sunil Narine have declined to participate in the ODI series.
“The panel welcomes back Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels, who will both add value to our batting and help with the nurturing of the young batsmen in the team,” said Chairman of Selectors, Courtney Browne, who explain why the other invitees declined to join the squad.
“Narine has confirmed his desire to play 50-over cricket again, but has asked to play in our Regional Super50 before he is considered, and Darren said he was not available for selection. Dwayne Bravo said he is still not 100 per cent fit, but is looking at a possible return to international cricket next year,” Brown indicated.
The full ODI squad is: Sunil Ambris, Devendra Bishoo, Miguel Cummins, Chris Gayle, Jason Holder (captain), Kyle Hope, Shai Hope, Alzarri Joseph, Evin Lewis, Jason Mohammed (vice-captain), Ashley Nurse, Rovman Powell, Marlon Samuels, Jerome Taylor and Kesrick Williams.
The West Indies will take on Ireland on September 13, at Stormont, Belfast, then open the series against England at Old Trafford on September 19.
The second match is scheduled for Trent Bridge on September 21, with the third set for the County Ground in Bristol on September 24.
The Kia Oval will host the fourth ODI on September 27, before the final match at the Ageas Bowl on September 29.
All the matches, except the encounter at County Ground, will be dayight fixtures.
