PM Harris and Attorney General reportedly at odds over continuing complaints on performance of High Court Registrar

Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 1 2017 – There is growing friction between Attorney General and Minister of Justice and Legal Affairs, Sen. the Hon. Vincent “Juicy’ Byron and Prime Minister, Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris over mounting complaints about the administration of the High Court in Basseterre.

Dr. Douglas said that Attorney General Byron, who was on island over the weekend, had on occasions represented Dr. Harris at several public functions in the past.

“It does not appear that the Prime Minister is able to call on the Attorney General to speak on his behalf, but if he (Harris) is going to defend his sister when the attorney general is trying to bring discipline in that department, what do you expect?” said Leader of the Oppoistion, the Right Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas.

The St. Kitts and Nevis Bar Association has been writing to Attorney General Byron on the situation at the High Court Registry, headed by Janine Harris-Lake, a sister of Prime Minister Harris.

Earlier this year lawyers, who spoke to WINNFM on condition of anonymity, complained of the frequent times she was out of office and in the absence of a deputy court registrar or any other senior officer to sign important court documents and orders, civil orders which needed to be signed by the Registrar were still sitting at the court.

Thursday an inside source said he expects the rift between Prime Minister Harris and the Attorney General, who is also minister of communication to widen, as the prime minister has been directly dealing with issues on information and communication technology.

He pointed to this week’s meeting in Canada between Dr. Harris and Jeffrey Kratz, Director, Worldwide Public Sector for Latin America, Canada and the Caribbean at Amazon Web Services during which both men discused technology-related matters.

“The minister (Byron) will never get a report on that meeting ….” said the source who requested his name not be used.
