Nationals disappointed Attorney General Byron did not address allegations of sexual assault in the AG’s Chambers
Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 14, 2018 – With allegations of sexual assault in the Chambers of the Attorney General, the Hon. Vincent Byron Jr arrived late for Tuesday’s sitting but sat stone-faced throughout Tuesday’s meeting of the St. Kitts and Nevis National Assembly and did not address the issue.
Byron, the brother of Sir Dennis Byron, President of the Caribbean Court of Justice and former Chief Justice of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court did not even participate in the debate on the St. Christopher Air and Sea Ports Authority (Bill).
Nationals of St. Kitts and Nevis at home and overseas were disappointed after being glued to their television sets, radio and the internet awaiting the Hon. Attorney General to make a statement.
“Am really disappointed not to hear even a denial from our Attorney General of this very serious issue,” said QS, a Kittitian resident in New York.
Two weeks ago, Prime Minister Harris had called on Mr. Byron to defend himself of the allegations.
“I cannot speak for the Hon. Attorney General who is not here and I would expect the Attorney General, being a man of law, is better suited than I am to make his own defence,” said Dr. Harris when asked about the issue at his recent press conference.
Since then, the Concerned Women of SKN has urged the Attorney General to break his silence.
A caller to a local talk show is of the view that Dr. Harris should initiate an independent investigation into allegation of a sexual assault in the Attorney General Chambers.
“Wrong is wrong. There should be no ifs or buts. The prime minister at his press conference is passing the buck to his Attorney General (Hon. Vincent Byron), instead of saying definitively, that there will be an independent investigation,” said a male caller.
He said no one will have confidence in a government department investigating himself.
The alleged assault in the Chambers of the Attorney General was first reported in the St. Kitts and Nevis National Assembly by Leader of the Opposition, The Right Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas.
