Wise Up Perkins! Too Late Shall Be Your Cry!
What you put in, is what you will get out! You lie down with dogs; you will definitely be infested by fleas!
“Take heed Hon. Michael Perkins,” is now a sentiment being echoed across the Federation and the region even, as persons continue to monitor the proceedings of the House of Parliament in St. Kitts and Nevis.
The actions of Speaker Perkins, who is evidently being puppeteered by Prime Minister Timothy Harris and others of the Harris-led government benches, are now receiving regional scrutiny.
Although Perkins might not be a popular or influential person locally, persons are urging him to wise up, do what is right, and remember that he is not irreplaceable.
Their concern for the Speaker is as a result of viewing first hand, Harris’ attitude, the victimization and the targeting of persons who once worked very closely with him. Many members of the community who loyally did his bad bidding and were instrumental in him [Harris] winning his seat and Prime Ministership, were cast aside like trash shortly after the 2015 elections, as they were no longer useful to him.
Perkins, who was politically appointed to the post of Speaker of the Federal Parliament, is allowing himself to be bent over and manipulated into meting out immoral and undemocratic rulings in Parliament against the members of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition and the members of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party.
The Speaker, beyond wisdom or intelligence, is the face of a campaign launched by Timothy Harris and his government, to disallow the members of the opposition their right to speak and contribute to the debates in Parliament, especially on critical and contentious matters and pieces of legislation.
Speaker Perkins, who receives his instructions from Harris before every Parliament sitting in addition to instructions via text messages throughout sittings, allows himself to be used as a pawn. He continues to neglect, reword and create his own rules in Parliament in an effort to frustrate and silence the Opposition.
Why the effort by Harris and his government?
Since taking office in 2015, Timothy Harris and his government have failed to deliver on a host of promises made to the electorate.
Various sectors in St. Kitts and Nevis, especially Health, Education, Tourism and National Security, have been on a downward trend since 2015 due to the Harris-led government’s permanently confused state as it pertains to the procedures, policies, and commitment necessary to ensure productivity across the board.
The Harris-led government is also riddled with scandals – from embezzlement and fraud to nepotism and on to sexual assaults and abuse of females.
It is for these reasons and tons more why the government is trying anything and everything to silence the Opposition.
The government, especially Timothy Harris, is mindful of the high level of competency the members of the opposition possess.
He is fully aware that the Opposition has the ability to expose him and his government for the fraudulent and corrupt administration it truly is.
It is for this reason why Speaker of the House, Hon. Michael Perkins, whose job is only to facilitate debate and not contribute to it or block it, is allowing himself to be used as a puppet, trading in his dignity and responsibility to the people of this nation to do Harris’ dirty anti-democratic work.
The community is urging the Speaker to execute his position in its entirety, without fear or favor, and to allow parliamentarians to make their contributions and debate matters, as it is the right and democratic thing to do.
