Civil Servants Under Pressure From Harris’ Reign Of Terror

The PAM/CCM/PLP coalition, led by Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris, is one that has caused great alarm and discomfort within the civil service, according to Hon. Marcella Liburd, elected St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party representative for constituency number two. While speaking earlier this week at the Party’s monthly press conference, Hon. Liburd stated that she is simply sharing the concerns of the people, as conveyed to her and expressed on various social media platforms.

Hon. Liburd spoke to the immense pressure civil servants are feeling from the Harris-led government, due to the rampant neglect, disrespect, nepotism, and victimization meted out to them at the government’s whims and fancies.

She further pointed out that the government’s track record has proved that they have terribly failed the workers of the Federation.

As a result, civil servants now find themselves in uncomfortable and untenable working environments in every government department.

“Civil Servants are under tense pressure. Everyone is afraid to speak their mind and job insecurity prevails throughout every single ministry.”

Liburd continued, “Public servants have seen hundreds of their co-workers dismissed, demoted, sent on forced retirement, sidelined, undermined, humiliated and disrespected on an ongoing basis. Workers are being sent home and told they have reached the ‘age’, but other workers of similar ages and older are being kept on. Some are being taken on after that age and much older than those being sent home.”

Nepotism was also on her list of issues with the Harris-led government.

“Persons, family members, and close friends are being put in positions in the government, without any advertisement of the post. This is a requirement of the Public Service Act. No advertisement! No interviews! Some persons are never given an opportunity to even apply for those positions. This is a part of the rampant and blatant politicization of the workforce.”

She also highlighted the breach of protocol by some government officials, whose role is to politically victimize specific workers.

Workers are encouraged to stand up against the government, as their rights and well-being are depending on it.

It is time for workers to stand-up for their rights and I want to at this time applaud all those workers who have instructed lawyers to protect their rights against a dictatorial regime that is trampling on the rights of workers.”
