“The People Deserve Answers” Dr. Douglas Questions Harris-led Government

Leader of the Opposition, Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas is demanding the government of St. Kitts and Nevis to come forward with the truth and precise details of the possible repercussions of their recent passage of the St. Christopher Air and Sea Port Authority (Amendment) Bill 2018.

On behalf of the people of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. Douglas stated that the government owes the people the truth and should respond hastily to a number of questions the public has been asking.

Dr. Douglas was at the time speaking during the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party’s (SKNLP) February Press Conference, on February 28th 2018.

Gathered from the public via several social media platforms, Dr. Douglas asked,

How many cruises do we stand to lose due to the pending price increase? Can our now struggling economy take such a blow? What will we fall back on to offset this pending loss of thousands of dollars in revenue? How will SCASPA repay the St. Kitts-Nevis Anguilla National Bank’s loan of EC$100-MILLION with which Dr. Harris’ government has further burdened it?”

We have gone backward, we are no longer number one,” Dr. Douglas said.

“The reality of The St. Christopher Air and Sea Ports Authority is about to change for the worse,” Dr. Douglas noted, adding that this drastic change was sure to have a significant negative impact on our Tourism industry.

He disclosed that in order for the four multimillion-dollar loans to be serviced, the head tax that is paid by cruise ships will have to be increased.

Speaking specifically to the passage of the bill, the opposition leader stated that “This disastrous piece of legislation, having been passed into law, has taken our country backward, as it has given express permission for yet another portion of our patrimony – our border entrances and exits – to be sold off.”

Dr. Douglas reminded the wider community that both Senator Nigel Carty and himself were blocked from speaking in Parliament and revealing the government’s reckless plan.

“Had we not been illegally blocked from contributing to the debate, the nation would’ve been better informed that Dr. Harris and his government had come to pass a bill that in effect would allow the government to sell off all the assets of SCASPA, our airport and seaport, two assets of high strategic importance.”

He continued to state that, “SCASPA’s debt has now increased by some $110 Million and its debt service rate has gone up to $14 million per month.”
