Dr Hanley Unveiled As New Labour Candidate; Patches Begs Him For A Chance
The St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party has officially revealed their first of four new candidates that will contest the next General Elections in the Federation.
At Sunday’s public meeting, (May 6th) in New Town, Leader of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party Rt. Hon. Dr Denzil Douglas disclosed that Dr Hanley will assume the position of caretaker of Constituency number one from previous long-standing Labour representative, Dr Earle Asim Martin.
Dr Hanley’s selection came about following a rigorous candidate selection process conducted by the St. Kitts- Nevis Labour Party. Hanley went up against other community activists who reside in the community for the post.
Dr Douglas expressed his appreciation to Dr Martin for his contribution to his community, the Labour Party and the country over the last 25 years.
“Dr Martin has served with distinction and as he has told you, he is not going anywhere. That is the beauty of transitional leadership here in the Labour party that is how it should be. The man who has served, and who has come to the point when he no longer wishes to serve, passes the baton on to the man who is willing to serve.”
Dr Douglas also commended Dr Hanley for stepping up to the plate to take over and represent his community and his country.
“…And tonight, I say thanks to Dr Geoffrey Hanley who stepped forward on the stage for the first time taking a place among the leadership of our great party and out poured his hearts of thanks and gratitude to Dr Martin for the service he has provided to his community, his constituency and his country over the years.”
He continued, “But who is Geoffrey Hanley? He has been one who has been very fortunate to sit at the feet of Dr Asim Martin. Born in Newtown of humble parents, he is not an unknown entity in East Basseterre.”
Dr Douglas stated boldly that is confident Dr Hanley will defeat the incumbent representative and minister, Hon. Ian Patches Liburd.
“He is going to take out Patches! Geoffrey will replace Patches in the parliament of our country as the representative of constituency number one. Mark my word tonight!”
The comrade Leader also sent a warning to Hon. Ian ‘Patches’ Liburd: “And tell Patches that no matter how much he tried to pacify Geoffrey and discouraging him by saying he has intentions to hand over to him – just give him one more term – tell him I say his term is up! Geoffrey will take him out!”
The wider community is still awaiting confirmation as to the identity of the other new candidates for constituency number four, number five and number seven.
