Marchers Highlight Social Ills; Condemns Corruption, Nepotism, Crime and Victimisation in St. Kitts and Nevis

Members of the workforce in St Kitts and Nevis used this year’s Labour Day March to highlight a number of issues plaguing the Federation.

Close to 7000 persons took to the streets of Basseterre on May 7th, with majority of them wielding placards bearing poignant messages aimed at those in the high ranks of government.

Most of the placards spoke to the blatant and rampant occurrences of victimization, corruption and gross nepotism, as well as a significant increase in crime.

Chants came from the marchers calling for an end to victimisation and the government’s politicisation of the Basseterre High School matter. Many also openly condemned the government’s plans to build a new school on the water table and its plan to disenfranchise nationals living overseas.

A large billboard was also mounted on the Patsy Allers Playfield which read, “Coming Soon – an end to this [Team Unity] Government.”

Notably, over 200 persons have been victimised in various ways by the Timothy Harris-led Team Unity Government (TUG) over the past three years.

Opposition parliamentarians and caretakers of the St Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) have steadily expressed concern over widespread victimisation of civil servants and employees of government-owned statutory corporations.

Following Labour Day, these key messages still continue to lead conversations on social media and national radio.
