NHC BREAKS GROUND IN TAOYUAN HEIGHTS, CHALLENGERS

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, May 11th, 2018 – The National Housing Corporation (NHC), broke ground in Taoyuan Heights, Challengers to afford the residents of the village another opportunity to acquire their own homes.

During a brief but significant presentation at the grounds of Taoyuan Heights, the Hon. Lindsay Grant expressed his satisfaction in the commencement of construction in his constituency.  “I am extremely delighted to be here in Challengers today. This has been long and coming and I know that the people of Challengers and the neighboring communities are happy. It was my campaign promise that the people of Challengers will get a new development and I must live up to that commitment,” he said.

Hon. Grant also voiced his gratitude to the Hon. Eugene Hamilton, Minister with responsibility for NHC. “I want to thank the Hon. Eugene Hamilton and the Management and staff of NHC for ensuring that the residents of Challengers get another opportunity to own a home. I was advised that what we see here is just the beginning and so, I want to thank Mr. Hamilton for standing behind me and the people of Challengers. The people here have not seen anything new in a long time and I want to let the people know that Challengers is just the start, we have many more to come,” uttered Mr. Grant.

The clearing of the land suggests the preparation for the start of construction of another set of houses under the Unity Housing Solution Program. These houses will be built on close to an acre of land overlooking the scenic ocean.

Hon. Eugene Hamilton indicated that there will be 12 houses constructed in Taoyuan Heights and that these are houses that would have been sold to middle to upper class families because of the view and location.  He said that the houses will have the same designs as the current homes but will be built with a flat roof to accommodate an upstairs living quarters.

“This area, Taoyuan Heights, is to develop homes in the first instance. The intention is to have those homes built sufficiently into the sloping land to give an opportunity to those families that may grow over-time, to build a little higher to a second floor,” he explained. Mr. Hamilton mentioned that poor people will be living on land that ordinarily you can only sell for ‘lots of dollars’ or to ‘persons with money’.  “The poor people in this area will be given more than a leg up, we are giving them a lift up,” he said.

Hon. Hamilton is hopeful that the construction of these homes will conclude in the next several months.  He also thanked Hon. Grant for his patience as he waited for this phase to begin.
