Brantley encourages public servants to take advantage of financial package announced by PM Harris
BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, May 26, 2018 (PLP PR Media Inc.) — Prime Minister, Dr the Hon Timothy Harris, was in Nevis on Tuesday and Wednesday May 22/23, and Premier the Hon Mark Brantley apprised Nevisians on Prime Minister’s visit. He in particular encouraged public servants to take advantage of the new financial package announced by Dr Harris.
“The Prime Minister whilst here made a few announcements,” said Premier Brantley on his ‘On the Mark’ programme on VON Radio on Wednesdayevening. “I think it is important again because he has made the announcement, of course the $30 million, that the Federal Government in injecting into the economy through some provisions for loans to individuals who are in the public service.”
Premier Brantley, who is the Political Leader of the Nevis-based Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM), one of the three parties in the Team Unity Administration, explained that Prime Minister Harris had made it clear to the established and non-established workers that the loans would be processed through the Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis, which has branches in Nevis and St. Kitts.
“He made it clear that the money will be at five per cent, which he said is the lowest that anybody can borrow in St. Kitts and Nevis – Five per cent interest rate,” remarked the Hon Brantley. “You will have to, of course, satisfy the requirements of the bank but if you satisfy those requirements you access up to $300,000 at five per cent.”
The Nevis Premier assured public servants that they are valued, and their contribution appreciated and promised those on Nevis that his Government will continue to work with them. He encouraged those wishing to build a home, add on to an existing one, change a roof or do some repairs to take advantage of the opportunity that has been provided.
On Tuesday evening May 22, Prime Minister Harris was among the many people who congregated at the Nevis Performing Arts Centre (NEPAC) in Charlestown for a gala event in honour of Nevis’ immediate former Premier, the Hon Vance Amory who is also the Senior Minister in Team Unity’s Federal Cabinet.
“This afternoon (Wednesday) I got a bit of a break and I was able to join him (Prime Minister Harris, who is also the Minister of National Security) with our Fire and Rescue Services over at the Vance Amory International Airport fire hall,” the CCM Leader told his audience. “We were able first hand to hear the concerns of the firemen and women to really understand in a better way and I really, really appreciate the opportunity to be there with them.”
Praising the Fire and Rescue Services officers, Premier Brantley said: “I was very pleased to hear that they have the lowest rate of sick leave in the entire country, that they show up for work willingly every day to do what they need to do, and I am very pleased for that and I certainly have given them my commitment not withstanding of course the NIA has no budgetary responsibility for Fire or Police, we continue to do our part.”
