PM Harris says Nevis’ unique tourism is a blessing to the national tourism product
CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS, May 29, 2018 (PLP PR Media Inc.) — Premier of Nevis and Minister of Tourism in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) the Hon Mark Brantley had the distinct pleasure to host Governor General His Excellency Sir Tapley Seaton, GCMG, CVO, QC, JP, and Prime Minister Dr the Hon Timothy Harris on Saturday May 26 at the prestigious Four Seasons Resort in Nevis.
The occasion was the hosting of the glamourous annual NIA Ministry of Tourism’s Tourism Awards Gala and Dance, the first since he assumed island’s leadership. Political Leader of the Nevis-based Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM), one of the three parties in the ruling Team Unity Administration, Hon Brantley also holds the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Aviation portfolios in the Federal Cabinet.
Prime Minister Harris stated that the event, which was held under the patronage of Mr Theodore Kelly, accentuated the reality that Nevis holds a special place not only in the Federation’s tourism landscape but in the entire Caribbean, and was pleased that under Tourism Minister, and also Premier, the Hon Mark Brantley, the island’s tourism product was moving from strength to strength.
“Bath Hotel was the first hotel in the Caribbean, which opened in 1778,” observed Prime Minister Harris. “The island was again in the limelight when the Four Seasons Resort opened in 1990 as the most prestigious tourism entity in the Caribbean.Tonight signature event goes a long way to show that by honouring the movers and shakers of the island’s thriving tourism economy that the Government in Nevis wishes to maintain that unique position.”
Dr Harris, who later met with the featured speaker Mr Colin James, Chief Executive Officer of the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority, and some of the night’s awardees, added: “The Federation has now reached the important milestone as we host over a million cruise tourists in a year. As we push for more land based tourism numbers with the coming on stream several internationally acclaimed brand name hotels on St. Kitts, the Nevis tourism product is certainly a boon to our overall effort.”
The gala, which was held under the theme ‘Eat Well, Live Well, Be Well’, was also attended by the Acting Deputy Governor General for Nevis Her Honour Mrs Marjorie Morton, President of the Nevis Island Assembly the Hon Farrel Smithen, Senior Minister in the Federal Government and immediate past Premier of Nevis the Hon Vance Amory, and Mrs Vernie Amory. Others were the Deputy Premier the Hon Alexis Jeffers, NIA Cabinet Ministers the Hon Eric Evelyn and the Hon Spencer Brand, and Acting PS in the Ministry of Tourism in Nevis, Mr John Hanley.
Awards distributed were Hotel Manager of the Year (Mr Olsen Maynard), Hotel of the Year (Golden Rock Inn), Tourism Employee of the Year (Ms Stacy Parris), Best Nevisian Culinary Experience (Ms Esmie Parris – Esmie’s Sunrise Bar and Superette), Long Service in the Hospitality Sector (Ms Roslyn Jeffers), Tourism Entrepreneurship Award (Mr Randy Jeffers), Taxi Operator of the Year (Mr John Prentice), and Tourism Partner of the Year (Rams Nevis Ltd).
