Deputy Leader Marcella Liburd Calls On COP & DPP To Investigate Harris’ Involvement in London Bribery Scandal

As a result of Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris’ refusal to comment directly on the London Bribery Scandal and his relationship with billionaire Peter Virdee, citizens have begun to seek answers elsewhere and are hence calling on local authoritative bodies to investigate the matter.

Speaking on behalf of the people of St. Kitts and Nevis, Deputy Leader of the St. Kitts and Nevis Labour Party Hon. Marcella Liburd called on the Commissioner of Police and the Director of Public Prosecution to look into the Prime Minister’s involvement in the bribery scandal as it is an illegal offence.

Hon. Liburd drew reference from the recent resignation of an Antigua-Barbuda Minister, who to was mentioned in the scandal, noting that the Antigua-Barbuda Prime Minister stated that the matter is one that would tarnish any government, and go beyond to taint the credibility of any country.

To this, Hon. Liburd stated that it is for these reasons Prime Minister Harris should resign as the well-being of the country depends on it.

“…He cannot serve in this government as it is too much of a distraction, it hangs over the government and the country. Attempted bribery is a crime in St. Kitts. I am challenging the Police Commissioner and DPP to take up this matter. Are standards of good governance and integrity different in Antigua and Barbuda and other countries than here in St. Kitts and Nevis? Do we have a different standard?”

Meanwhile, Hon. Konris Maynard said the Prime Minister has made a personal admission of guilt regarding the London Bribery Scandal, having hired Dr. Henry Browne QC, who Prime Minister Harris deemed as the “best criminal lawyer in the Caribbean”.

“You are accused of being a part of a bribery scheme and scandal and the first persons you can think of going to is the best criminal lawyer, as you called them, in the Caribbean? That the first person you seek to get advice from, not even a constitutional lawyer or civil lawyer…? The mere fact that he has gone to the best criminal lawyer in the Caribbean can also be seen as an admission of guilt and he needs the best in order to defend him.’
